Easter Countdown
When is Easter?
Easter falls on a different date each year because it's calculated based on the lunar calendar. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the spring equinox.
Here are the upcoming Easter dates:
- Easter 2026: Sunday, April 5
- Easter 2027: Sunday, March 28
- Easter 2028: Sunday, April 16
- Easter 2029: Sunday, April 1
- Easter 2030: Sunday, April 21
How is Easter calculated?
The calculation for Easter's date – called the Computus – is pretty complex. The First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD established Easter as the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon (that's the first full moon on or after March 21 [the ecclesiastical spring equinox]).
Practically, this means Easter can fall anywhere from March 22 and April 25.
The algorithm involves tracking the 19-year Metonic cycle of moon phases and (of course!) accounting for century-based corrections. My countdown tool above uses the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm to compute Easter's date.
Western vs. Eastern Orthodox Easter
Note that this countdown shows the Western (Catholic/Protestant) Easter. Eastern Orthodox churches often celebrate Easter on a different date because they use the Julian calendar for the calculation. In some years the dates align; in others they can differ by one to five weeks.
