Dividend Income Calculator: Project Dividend Income with DRIP, Taxes, and Inflation

Written by:

Below, find a Dividend Income Calculator that projects the dividend income on a US-listed stock, ETF, or mutual fund. Model reinvestment or cash payouts, monthly contributions, estimated dividend taxes and inflation, and set a monthly income goal for that security to project a target date.

Dividend income calculator

Using the calculator

Enter a stock, ETF, CEF, ADR, or mutual fund ticker and the parameters of your scenario, then hit Project Dividend Income.

  • Starting position – enter a dollar amount or a share count to invest
  • Years – how long to model your projection
  • Monthly contribution – new money to add at the start of each month
  • Dividend growth and price growth – annual assumptions prefilled from the ticker’s five-year payout CAGR and five-year split-adjusted price CAGR when history is available, or 0%
  • Monthly income goal – your average monthly dividend income target to use for the goal solver
  • DRIP or cash – whether after-tax payouts buy more fractional shares (like a DRIP, or Dividend Reinvestment Plan), or are paid out in cash on the side. Note that taking payouts as cash also changes the visualization – see below

The Growth, Taxes, & Inflation button opens a pane which contains advanced options. There you can change your contribution growth (which raises your monthly contribution each year), your estimated dividend tax rate, the inflation rate to model, and set your income goal in today's dollars or future dollars.

The Reset button restores the ticker's defaults and the standard scenario.

An important warning here: these are scenario assumptions, not forecasts. No matter how good your modeling is here, your results will vary.

Reading the results

The overview shows your ending after-tax annualized dividend-income run rate divided by 12, its inflation-adjusted equivalent, your ending wealth, and your yield on cost.

Yield on cost is your projected annual dividend income divided by what you invest:

Yield\ on\ Cost = \frac{Gross\ Annualized\ Dividend\ Income}{Total\ Contributions}

The income chart shows your projected year-end after-tax annualized dividend-income run rate. When you choose to model dividends as cash, a gray cap on the graph's bars shows the additional run rate an otherwise identical DRIP scenario would generate.

The wealth chart tracks your position value. When you are in cash mode, it separates the position from the accumulated cash.

Projection details below the charts include projections for:

  • ending shares
  • position value
  • cumulative contributions
  • cumulative after-tax dividends
  • nominal and inflation-aware income
  • an estimated ex-dividend schedule

The year-by-year table starts with a separate Start row (your position before any projection) followed by each year's results.

And, of course, this is a DQYDJ calculator – when you are happy with your modeling, the whole scenario exports to CSV, just hit the Export link!

The income goal solver

Beyond projecting dividend income, you can invert the scenario and solve for an Income Goal. That tab contains:

  • Expected target date – the first modeled month when the annualized after-tax income run rate divided by 12 reaches the goal, or a report that the goal is "Not reached"
  • Starting investment needed – the initial investment required to reach your goal by the end of the selected projection period, with monthly contributions held fixed
  • Required monthly contribution – the monthly contribution required to reach your goal by the end of the projection period, with the initial investment held fixed

The Growth, Taxes, & Inflation panel described above controls whether the goal is measured in today's dollars (inflation-adjusted) or future dollars.

Sharing a scenario

The page URL updates as you run projections. This means you can either bookmark the tool or share the link with someone else to continue modeling.

Want to dig into the payout history behind the prefilled growth assumptions? The linked Dividend Growth Calculator shows the ticker's dividend record. For historical total returns, see our stock, ETF, or mutual fund total return calculators.

How our projection works

Our initial income baseline is the trailing 12 months of recurring payouts based on Tiingo end-of-day data, with special distributions (that we can identify) excluded.

The model invests contributions at the start of each month and divides the annual payout evenly across the security’s inferred ex-dividend months. Note these are timing estimates, not forecasts of individual payment dates or amounts.

In DRIP mode, we buy additional fractional shares at a dividend month's modeled price. In cash mode, payouts accumulate separately and don't earn interest.

A warning: this is not a forecast, a guarantee, or real-time data. There may be mistakes or omissions in the data and you are encouraged to verify data elsewhere and run numbers manually. Anything you see in the tool is for research or informational purposes only.

Caveats aside, hopefully this is a useful tool for modeling – may your dividends grow and beat your projections!
