Cubed calculator
What does cubed mean?
Cubing a number means multiplying it by itself three times. The notation n³ (read as "n cubed") comes from geometry - the volume of a cube with side length n is n × n × n, or n³.
Unlike squaring, cubing preserves the sign of a number. Positive numbers stay positive, and negative numbers stay negative (since negative × negative × negative = negative).
Cubed formula
The formula for cubing is:
Where n is any real number.
Cubed examples
- 3³ = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27
- 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125
- (-4)³ = (-4) × (-4) × (-4) = -64
- 0.5³ = 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.125
Perfect cubes
A perfect cube is the result of cubing a whole number. The first 10 perfect cubes are:
1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000
Perfect cubes grow much faster than perfect squares. While 10² is 100, 10³ is 1000. This rapid growth makes cubed values important in physics (volume calculations) and finance (compound growth over three periods).
Using the cubed calculator
Enter any number in the Base field - the exponent is already set to 3. The calculator shows your result instantly, along with common powers of your base in the Special Cases section.
You can also type e for Euler's number or pi for π to cube mathematical constants.
