What is an improper fraction?

An improper fraction has a numerator that is greater than or equal to its denominator. For example, 7/4, 5/3, and 9/9 are all improper fractions. Unlike proper fractions, improper fractions represent values of 1 or greater.

Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers

To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number:

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator
  2. The quotient becomes the whole number
  3. The remainder becomes the new numerator (over the same denominator)

Example:

\frac{17}{5} = 17 \div 5 = 3 \text{ R } 2 = 3\frac{2}{5}
