Happy Sunday, folks, and Happy Mother's Day!
We haven't talked informally for a bit, plus I've got a few updates for you – no better time than the present, right? Let's get into it.
Equity Return Calculators
I just finished a massive update to the backend of the equity return calculators. That's the following series:
I've pruned some older stale tickers – think buyouts, ticker changes, bankruptcies, closed funds, mergers, exchange changes, and the like. The tool will also now auto-prune old tickers.
Second, I ran through and added tickers that the tool wasn't currently tracking. Here you'll find ticker changes (and SPACs!), spinoffs, IPOs, and similar.
I wasn't able to automate this process yet, unfortunately. There are many older rights, warrants, and other instruments in the data I have to remove manually. When IEX brings back a corporate action and IPO endpoint, I'll automate these, but for now, this has to remain a manual process.
Finally, I took a look at data errors and splits. Half step here, but it's a big one: I added a web form to override a ticker's historical data when we hit errors.
For recent data issues, I'll get an email. If you see tickers with historical data issues (say, 10+ years ago), send me a note plus the ticker and I'll take a look. (I don't know I'll ever be able to automate this step fully, but this saves me a lot of time over writing manual scripts, haha.)
Oh – and it's still free up to the rate limit. So, check the tools out and enjoy!
Jackpot
My friend – and fellow Bay Arean – Michael Mechanic recently finished up his book on the super rich, Jackpot. He traces how the wealthy really live, plus looks at their habits – and legacies.
(Oh, and if you check the footnotes, I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find in there!)
Happy Mother's Day!
On the personal side, we got the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine after it was re-released here in California. Even with my purported numeracy, I'll still be watching for clots for a few weeks, of course 🧮.
We haven't been on a plane for a bit, so we're looking forward to swapping road trips for Boeings.
I don't think I shared it here, but we adopted a dog. Meet Otto:
Only some of his DNA came back recognizable when tested. He's primarily a German Shepherd with a bunch of Husky... and somehow, some Rottweiler (didn't see that coming!).
I've got a bunch more calculators coming to DQYDJ – I'll send some of them to the list, but the smaller ones I'll skip. Watch the calculators page if you really want to see everything... but some will be foundational.
I also owe you some prose, too – I'll get to it eventually.
Hope all is well with you!
