Written by:

On this page is a cotangent calculator, for either angles or degrees. Input an angle's measurement, choose your units, and run the calculator to see the cotangent.

## Using the Cotangent Calculator

To use the tool to find the cotangent, enter the measurement of the angle in either degrees or radians, choose the units, and compute.

• Angle - measurement of the angle, in degrees or radians)

Once happy, click the "Compute Cotangent" button.

• Cotangent - the cotangent, or ratio of the adjacent side over the opposite side's measurement

## What is the cotangent?

For a given angle in a right triangle, cotangent is the ratio of the adjacent side to the opposite side. Cotangent is the reciprocal of the tangent; tangent is the ratio of the opposite side's length to the adjacent side.

Trigonometric functions like the cotangent can also be used to find the ratio between sides of a unit circle (a circle with radius 1).

### Cotangent as a formula

As a trigonometry formula, cotangent is usually abbreviated as "cot", as in the following equation:

\cot(\theta)

As the reciprocal of tangent, it's equivalent to:

\cot(\theta)=\frac{1}{\tan(\theta)}

If you know the cotangent, use the inverse cotangent or arccotangent to find the angle.
