Squared calculator
What does squared mean?
Squaring a number means multiplying it by itself exactly once. The notation n² (read that as "n squared") comes from geometry - the area of a square with side length n is n × n, or n².
When you square a positive number, the result is larger except for fractions between 0 and 1. When you square a negative number, the result is always positive since a negative × negative = positive.
Squared formula
The formula for squaring is:
n^2 = n \times n
Where n is any real number.
Squared examples
- 5² = 5 × 5 = 25
- 12² = 12 × 12 = 144
- (-7)² = (-7) × (-7) = 49
- 0.5² = 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25
Perfect squares
A perfect square is the result of squaring a whole number. The first 15 perfect squares are:
1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225
Perfect squares appear everywhere in math - from the Pythagorean theorem to factoring quadratic equations. Recognizing them makes mental math much more straightforward!
Using the squared calculator
Enter any number in the Base field - the exponent is already set to 2, representing squaring. The calculator shows your result instantly, along with common powers of your base in the Special Cases section.
You can also type e for Euler's number or pi for π to square mathematical constants.
