The discount formula
To calculate a discounted price:
\text{sale price} = \text{original} \times \left(1 - \frac{\text{discount \%}}{100}\right)
The amount saved is simply:
\text{savings} = \text{original} - \text{sale price}
Example: 30% off a $200 item
With 30% off a $200 item:
\text{sale price} = \$200 \times (1 - 0.30) = \$200 \times 0.70 = \$140
You save $60 and pay $140.
